The Meating Place 2018
Stakeholders in Ontario’s meat and poultry processing sector gathered for their biennial conference, The Meating Place, with the highlight being the awards banquet where OIMP members are recognized for their accomplishments in a number of different areas.
AKR Consulting, Mississauga, Barilo’s Fine Sausages, Newmarket, Herrington’s Quality Butchers, Port Perry, and The Meat Depot, Oshawa, were all on hand to receive their 10-year member plaque. Minotaur Software, Brampton, received their plaque from 2017. Tim Schinkel accepted the 25-year plaque on behalf of Schinkel’s Legacy, Chatham.
Laurie Nicol received the Lifetime Member Award from last year’s recipient, Joe Abate. Laurie retired earlier this year after 33 years serving the association with determination and hard work.
VC999, received the third ever Associate Member Recognition Award or AMRA. The AMRA is given to an Associate Member company that is deserving of recognition for their contribution to the association and to the industry.
Presented as a blind taste-test with delegates voting on their favourites, the Dave Tiller People’s Choice is a friendly competition among members. With 20 entries submitted (11 snack sticks, 9 jerky), Brian Quinn’s Meats, Yarker, received the most votes for their Honey Heat beef and pork snack stick and Buster Rhino’s, Whitby, took the prize for their Pig Candy pork jerky.

Surviving & Thriving in a Land of Giants, Ken Wong
In this talk Ken will draw upon the experiences in food, grocery and other industries to show why price competition is harder on SMEs than larger firms, show the origins of the large firm’s advantages and discuss ways to circumvent or attack those advantages. Ken will also show why the markets where SMEs traditionally have focused are likely to come under greater attack moving forward.
