The Examination is based on the materials covered in the Food Handler Training Manual, Study Guide and Workshops.

Why Should I Take the Examination

  • Every food handler plays a critical role in food safety. Successfully completing this Examination provides assurance to employers, inspection authorities and customers that you understand your food safety responsibilities and how to control food safety hazards.
  • It is important to maintain a certificate in Food Handler Training, and should be renewed every 5 years.

About The Examination

  • The Food Handler Training Examination is coordinated through the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus. Examinations are scheduled throughout the year in various locations in Ontario.
  • The worker level examination contains 75 multiple choice questions, and a passing grade of 70% must be achieved. The examination in approximately one and a half hours.
  • The supervisor level examination contains 90 multiple choice questions, and you must achieve 75% to pass. The examination in approximately two hours.
  • Examinations are available in 10 languages: English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Traditional Chinese.
  • Workers and supervisors who successfully complete the examination will receive a Certificate of Completion from the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus.
